The so-called "Social Investment" approach has been a rort from the start when it began under Bill English.

It was always a fig leaf to pretend the Nats had a social conscience by promoting a relatively small amount of spending in a couple of social areas while making widescale cuts in others that they didn't own up to.

      • bwaghorn 3.1.1

Maybe any wealth tax should steal and use the name social investment, a rebranding of the negative mindset around the word tax is required.

        • Bearded Git 3.1.1.1

mmmm….good idea….instead of wealth tax something like this?

          social investment capital levy

          social investment tariff

          social investment duty

          social investment assets levy

Judge them on actions not rhetoric.

The kicking being dished out in health, education, housing, te-reo etc is there for all to see.

They were told their numbers didnt add up so now we have Willis and cohorts wrecking the joint financially and environmentally for good measure.

Shitting the bed for future generations to sleep in, well done NZ, you got played.

Wake the f up and turf these puppets of international capital out next year….if they get that far with those egos and agendas.

We tell our kids to study hard and get a degree, then we throw this in their face:

A grim forecast for new graduates

It seems that those searching for their first office jobs are most at risk. Amodei has predicted AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white collar jobs in the next five years and in the New York Times (paywalled), Kevin Roose reports that numerous firms are “making rapid progress toward automating entry-level work”, while others are becoming “AI-first”, evaluating whether a job even needs a human before posting the vacancy.

While this trend is most visible in the US, its implications are global – including for New Zealand, where many graduate roles mirror their overseas counterparts. The IMF has warned that up to 60% of jobs in advanced economies may be affected by AI. If so, the dream of a secure professional career may become a luxury afforded only to those already through the door.

You'd have to excuse them if they just gave up.

P.S. Have any governments of advanced economies thought about what happens to their revenue when 60% of jobs vanish?

I'd like to double down on the call that there will be martial law in the u.s. before the midterms..

    • Phillip ure 5.1

Trump won't want to risk the Republicans being kicked out of office..

That is the main reason why martial law must happen before then ..

    • joe90 5.2

Remember way back when Republicans spent the Obama presidency howling posse comitatus.

Five hundred Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines are ready to deploy and provide backup to the National Guard troops on the ground in L.A., U.S. Northern Command said this evening.

The Marines, garrisoned at the Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, about 150 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, are at the ready “should they be necessary to augment and support the DoD’s protection of federal property and personnel efforts,” NORTHCOM said in a statement.

So far, 2,000 California Army National Guard soldiers have been activated, but only about 300 have been deployed to protect federal personnel and property in the greater L.A. area, according to the NORTHCOM statement. They are in Los Angeles, Paramount and Compton.

I had to look that up..

        I should have known..but I didn't..

That is an effective check and balance,.one would hope..

Quite likely. Noted the other day Trump has issued a 'threat' to Musk should he donate to the Democrats. I take that to mean that anyone who gives a large donation to the Democrats could end up being threatened.

The Jackal nails it again today in his (?) comparison between Damian Grant and Phil Goff's take on the Gaza genocide-see today's side panel.

Why Stuff prints convicted fraudster Grant's lies, sorry opinions, is a mystery.

    • tc 6.1

Grant is a useful tool who can wax lyrically to get across the talking points for his handlers.

He has served time for prior deceptive behavior so he is well qualified for this role and would be loving the immunity writing for the big end of town carries.

The reserve bank guys interview with Ryan on morning report, I didn't recognise the country he was discussing. That, and I've been listening to politicians and commentators for 50 years complaining about our productivity.

Ironically, the interview was notable for being closely surrounded by reports on how the NZ billionaire class was getting along

    Not on line yet.

    – Greta Thunberg

I hope nothing goes wrong here:

The Freedom Flotilla, an organisation seeking to break Israel's aid blockade of Gaza, is sailing the Madleen to the war-ravaged territory, carrying food and other supplies for the Palestinian population.

Israeli media has reported that the military plans to seize the ship and take it to the port of Ashdod, arresting and deporting the crew.

    But:

In 2010, the IDF boarded a Turkish ship leading a flotilla towards Gaza, and killed 10 people.

I imagine Thunberg and the rest of the crew are sensible enough to not do anything which might risk their lives, but you can't be sure the monsters in the IDF won't manufacture an incident, intentionally or otherwise.

I fear the worst, because they are capable of anything, and 'anti-semite' will be their cover.

Just the Israeli defence minister threatening the lives of GretaThunberg and other activists on board.

      ישראל כ”ץ Israel Katz

      @Israel_katz

I have instructed the IDF to act to prevent the "Madeleine" hate flotilla from reaching the shores of Gaza – and to take whatever measures are necessary to that end. To the anti-Semitic Greta and her fellow Hamas propaganda spokespeople, I say clearly: You should turn back – because you will not reach Gaza. Israel will act against any attempt to break the blockade or assist terrorist organizations – at sea, in the air, and on land.

"…you can't be sure the monsters in the IDF won't manufacture an incident…"

For that matter, we can't be sure aliens won't abduct them and subject them to probes, but we shouldn't consider either of those things very likely to happen.

On the RSB (Really Scary Bill), sorry if this has been linked before but it bears repeating.

    https://melanienelson.substack.com/p/what-happens-to-public-health-when?utm_source=podcast-email&publication_id=2518031&post_id=165395955&utm_campaign=email-play-on-substack&utm_content=watch_now_button&r=5rs818&triedRedirect=true&utm_medium=email

A chat between Melanie Nelson and Gary Payinda about RSB through a public health lens.

Spoiler Alert; it concludes with a plea that we put our submissions in and the real concern that that alone isn't enough. It is time for Direct Action. Protests at MP's offices, support striking workers (the nurses are doing roliing strikes currently), and disrupt the chances of re-election and deny these wreckers their donations.

    Just for a laugh…..albeit a sad one….

Whilst most folks view political theory as too arcane to be relevant, they really ought to learn from real life. US rightists are currently pondering who's the most useful idiot – Trump or Musk. When the right adopt a political framing historically established by the left, we get a political consensus on relevance. Lenin is normally identified as the originator of useful idiot theory, but history suggests otherwise: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Useful_idiot

Dead select committees are a doomster notion, but one of our journos sees a future for them: https://newsroom.co.nz/2025/06/05/the-dead-select-committee-theory/

on Wednesday, Parliament took a lurching, zombified step to making “dead select committee theory” a reality… Labour MP Duncan Webb revealed the Government MPs on the Finance and Expenditure select committee had used their majority to instruct that the submissions on the bill be read by artificial intelligence… bots writing submissions to be read by other bots, with the summary then considered by backbench MPs so thoroughly whipped by their parties that they may as well be bots too.

Bot takeover paranoia could catch on, eh? Yet a bot is merely a tool. So far.

dead internet theory posits that the majority of online activity is automated: bots writing content to be viewed by other bots, monetised by bots advertising products to yet more bots.

Market trading has been a high-speed computer-controlled scene for many years, and works just fine. So far. Two centuries of the democracy/capitalism hybrid is culminating in a highly-efficient control system: the wet dream of both red & blue neolibs. AI generating political propaganda is inevitable but gigo tells us the effect depends on how mass psychology is fed into the AI. Humans do that.
